The Bow Valley College mission is to contribute to the vitality of communities and strength of the economy through innovative adult education programs and services which equip students for successful living, lifelong learning, and work in a global knowledge-based environment. We are seeking an enthusiastic Sign Language Interpreter to help us achieve our mission.
Bow Valley College has cultivated a Sign Language Interpreter environment that has resulted in a highly experienced team of Sign Language Interpreters from across Canada, averaging 15 years of experience. We are the first post-secondary institution in Canada to hire a continuous, full time Deaf Interpreter as part of our DHH Services. Interpreters are teamed, and for new Canadians, or learners with ASL challenges, the DI works as another teamer. The range of ASL ability in our learners is broad, challenging most Sign Language Interpreters, but we work hard to create a supportive environment that promotes professional development.
Responsibilities include: prepare for and facilitate accurate, competent and impartial communication in a professional manner in different settings and situations; meet the language needs of students and staff using the preferred mode of communications which is primarily ASL but also could include working with a Deaf Interpreter, sign assisted oral, contact sign, etc; prepare for assignments by researching vocabulary; and as part of the Specialized Support team provide other academic services and activities.
Sign language interpreters at Bow Valley College work within an AUPE collective agreement environment.
